Congratulations to the 2024-25 class of National Junior Honor Society students! We can’t wait to see the impact this class has as they continue the tradition of service, leadership, scholarship and citizenship our chapter has been known for since its inception!
Happy National Education Support Professionals Day!
Today, we celebrate and thank the incredible Education Support Professionals (ESPs) who make a difference every day in our schools.
Our paraprofessionals, administrative assistants, custodians, tradespeople and technical staff, school security officers, bus drivers and transportation staff, food service workers, and health and student service employees often work behind the scenes but play a vital role in creating a positive learning environment and help our district run smoothly. Thank you for all you do!
Native American Heritage Month
November is Native American Heritage Month, a time to honor the history, culture and contributions of Indigenous peoples. Teachers and students have taken this opportunity to learn more about the rich traditions and history of Native communities through lessons, activities and student inquiry.
At Mason Middle School, Amber McCray’s What I Need (WIN) students have been researching the art, poetry, dance and music of the tribes of the Anishinaabe Nation. Through student-led research and reporting, they created presentations to share the cultural impact of the works they selected to research. Presentations will be shared in class and via a QR code in the hallway to allow anyone to view their projects.
Students worked in groups giving them a chance to take on different roles as they researched, collected resources and marketed their presentations. The group structure also gave students the chance to take on leadership roles, negotiate within the team and work cooperatively.

Dear Mason Families,
Later this school year, we will be launching a survey to gather your thoughts and opinions about ways Mason Public Schools can continue to improve and elevate our learning spaces, school facilities and district infrastructure. How We Prepare for Emergencies
Student safety and security is always a priority at Mason Public Schools. In recognition of America’s Safe Schools Week, we would like to share some of the ways the district works to keep students and staff safe.
Each building has emergency plans and practices drills to prepare for emergencies like fires, severe weather and safety threats.
In order to examine building safety, Mason Public Schools engaged Secure Environment Consultants to evaluate each of our buildings and determine priorities for safety and security projects. As a result of the evaluation, the district incorporated security upgrades into the 2017 bond projects and utilized grant funds to pay for updates that were completed this fall.
New door locks, with visual indicators, were installed on classroom and office doors in our buildings. These locks clearly show those inside the room whether the doors are locked or unlocked.
In addition, secure entryway vestibules were upgraded or added at each school building. At these entry points, building visitors enter through two doors with remote locks controlled by staff inside the building.
Safety and security are a top priority for the district, and we continue to prepare and train staff to respond to emergency situations and look forward to sharing additional updates and information about the district safety plans with families throughout the year.

Inclusion Every Day!
This school year, Mason Public Schools is happy to launch a new effort called "Inclusion Every Day!" This initiative is all about making sure every student and staff member feels included and valued in our district.
Each month, we will focus on a different topic related to inclusion. In September, we focused on Respect, and for October, we are focusing on Belonging. Throughout this month, teachers and staff will include lessons and activities that help everyone understand how important it is to feel like they belong in our school community. By doing this, we hope to create a strong sense of community where everyone feels connected.
We encourage parents and families to talk about respect and belonging at home, too. When we all work together, we can make Mason Public Schools a welcoming place for everyone.

2024-2025 COVID-19 and Respiratory Illness Update
Earlier this year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced changes to the COVID-19 guidance, moving away from an automatic five-day isolation period. The new guidance brings a unified approach to addressing a range of common respiratory viral illnesses including COVID-19, influenza, the common cold and RSV.
Staff and students who test positive for COVID-19 or experiencing any respiratory illness should stay home until:
- Their symptoms improve for 24 hours.
- They are fever-free for 24 hours, without the use of fever-reducing medication.
Please continue to report positive test results for COVID-19, Influenza, and RSV to your student’s school so we may monitor communicable disease levels and implement steps to prevent further spread of disease. If you have questions or need additional information, please email the MPS Health Team at bulldogrn@masonk12.net.

Remembering September 11
As our nation marks the 23rd anniversary of September 11, 2001, a day that deeply impacted our nation, we reflect and honor the memory of the lives lost, the heroes who emerged and the resilience shown by so many.
At school, teachers may take a moment this week to acknowledge the importance of this day and reflect on the values of unity, compassion and kindness. The 9/11 Memorial & Museum offers online resources for families to aide in discussion and help children understand the events of the day. If your child has questions or needs support, our counselors are available to help.

Parent/Teacher Conference Pilot Program
During contract negotiations this past summer, MPS teachers and administration agreed to enhance the opportunities for communication between schools and families. To that end, MPS has committed to a one-year pilot program regarding Parent/Teacher Conferences.
At the elementary level, Parent/Teacher Conferences will be in-person at your child’s school. Parents will receive information from elementary building principals as Parent/Teacher Conferences approach.
Parent/Teacher Conferences at Mason Middle School and Mason High School will be replaced with teacher-selected office hours this year.
The primary purpose of the pilot is to give students and families multiple, timely opportunities to communicate with teachers about academic and behavioral progress, replacing the underutilized traditional Parent/Teacher Conferences. During office hours, teachers, students, and/or parents can meet in person, via Microsoft Teams, or by telephone.
During the pilot process, the district will collect data from students, families, and teachers about the effectiveness of secondary office hours for future consideration.
Please look for communication regarding specific office hours from your student’s building principal by the end of this week. We look forward to this opportunity to connect teachers, students, and families.

Mental Health Awareness Month
MPS is dedicated to supporting the well-being of all students, including their physical and mental health. Mental health includes emotions, thoughts, and behaviors as well as how we handle stress, relate to others and make choices. Mental health issues can affect anyone, and these feelings can impact students in, and out, of the classroom.
To build stronger mental health, experts recommend working toward getting good sleep, eating well, exercising, attempting a work or school/life balance and having a positive mindset. Another way to care for students’ mental health is to create an environment of support and openness with students. Parents and caregivers can support students by:
- Talking openly: Encourage your child to talk about their feelings. Listen without judgment.
- Staying informed: Learn about the signs of mental health issues and where to get help.
- Being supportive: Show understanding and patience. Let your child know it's okay to seek help.
Families are also encouraged to learn more and access the district’s mental health professionals and resources in times of need.

Bulldog Bright Spot- The Eclipse is Coming!
On Monday, April 8, Mason, and most of the state of Michigan, will be in the path of a partial solar eclipse. The solar eclipse is expected to take place in the afternoon reaching its maximum at 3:12 p.m. and ending about 4:25 p.m. Students will be dismissed on their regular schedule.
A solar eclipse is one of nature’s grandest spectacles, but can also pose a threat to our eyes. In order to stay safe while viewing the eclipse, or even being outside during the time frame of the eclipse, follow these safety tips:
- Use eclipse glasses or solar viewers that meet the ISO 12312-2 standards (sometimes written as ISO 12312-2:2015). But do not stare continuously at the sun. Take breaks and give your eyes a rest.
- Use a box pinhole viewer or a pinhole projector to view the eclipse.
- Use your hands to cast shadows on the ground.
- Look at shadows on the ground, such as under a leafy tree to see the crescent sun shadows projected by the spaces between the leaves.
- Do not look at the sun directly, even with eye protection.
- Do not view through regular sunglasses, homemade filters, cameras, binoculars, telescopes, welder's glasses or damaged viewers or glasses
Learn more about eye safety and the eclipse. For information about school-specific plans for Monday, April 8, please contact your student's building administrator.
