 Mason High School’s New Assistant Principal Named Hometown Hero

MASON, Mich. — This fall, Kristin Higgins, who previously served as High School business and technology teacher was named the new Assistant Principal at Mason High School. ‘Higgs’, as she is known to the students and the community, joins the current High School leadership team of Principal, Lance Delbridge and Assistant Principal, Nick Toodzio. Additionally, ‘Higgs’ was recently named a Hometown Hero by Modern Woodman.

Educators in Michigan are using many strategies to ensure all their students become strong readers.  In Mason, the district employs a “literacy coach” in each of its three elementary schools.  They provide on-site training and assistance to classroom teachers.

Nick Toodzio, Assistant Principal of Mason High School has been named Michigan’s 2019 Assistant Principal of the Year by the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals (MASSP). Mr. Toodzio will now represent Mason Public Schools as the Michigan nominee to the National Association
of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) Assistant Principal of the Year competition which will be awarded at the National Principals Conference in Boston in July.

Mason Public Schools has opened up online registration for 2019-2020 kindergarten students. The Harvey Education Center will be home to all sections of Kindergarten and host to Mason’s early childhood students, in a newly renovated space; designed to meet the needs of our youngest learners. Parents and guardians are asked to visit the Enrollment webpage to complete the process between now and March 15.

On the May 7, 2019 ballot, Mason residents will be asked to consider the renewal of a 10-year operating millage which was passed in 2010. The millage, which will expire with the 2019 levy, is an 18-mill non-homestead property tax millage. This non-homestead operating millage is not paid by homeowners on their primary residences. This is a renewal of a tax paid on non-homestead property including industrial, commercial, business, rental and second homes.

At this week’s Board of Education meeting, Mason Public Schools welcomed two new members to the Board. Michael Kelly and Patrick O’Connor will serve the district and community as Board of Education members until 2024 and 2022 respectively.

In addition to the new Board of Education members, existing members who were reelected in November, were sworn in for their new terms. Ralph Beebe’s new term will expire in 2022 and Kurt Creamer’s new term will expire in 2024.
