MHS and MMS are National Unified Champion Schools!

Mason High School and Mason Middle School were recognized last week for earning designations as National Unified Champion Schools by Special Olympics Michigan! Of the more than 600 Unified Champion Schools in the state, only 27 have earned this highest designation by the Special Olympics.

“When people walk in, they know this is a place that’s safe, a place where their students stand out and look out for one another, where students believe in each other and celebrate each other for all of the different abilities they have in that school,” said Dan Ekonen, Special Olympics Chief Mission Officer, during the banner presentation.

In order to earn the designation, schools must meet 10 standards of excellence and have a school climate that “exudes a sense of collaboration, engagement and respect for all members of the student body and staff.”

The banners were presented during the 4th annual Ability Awareness Day which brought together more than 80 students from pre-kindergarten through high school to take part in activities, sports, yoga, puzzles and much more. Students from all Mason schools participated in the day-long event.

“We often focus on what students can’t do, this day is to celebrate our students and showcase what they can do, and they can do everything,” said Rachael Feskorn, Mason’s Unified Champion Schools Liaison.

Unified Partners and National Honors Society students from MMS and MHS played a crucial role in facilitating the day’s activities and fostering connections among students and staff. The event highlighted the district's commitment to creating an environment where every student feels valued and supported. Check out more photos of Ability Awareness Day 2025!
